The JOHN GRAY LAWS is a 10 episode anthology series that covers a sixty year period following the re-election of an ultra-conservative-pandering, narcissistic buffoon (definitely not based on anyone we might recognize...) to the oval office.
The video that brought you here is a background commercial in one of our later episodes called "Dodgers", which takes place several decades after the events described below. Tonally, we're a mix of Idiocracy meets the bastard daughter of Handmaid's Tale and Black Mirror - a tough needle to thread, but exactly what's required to tell these stories in a way that doesn't feel so endlessly bleak.
The world of the John Gray Laws can best be visualized by imagining the social progress trajectory of the 1950s through the 2000’s - in reverse. Except now we have smartphones and know where you are at all times, so it’s much easier to take away your rights and personal autonomy! Hooray for the future!
After surviving the second (and third…) term of this completely fictional president, disaster strikes in the form of an enormous, apocalyptic volcanic eruption in the South Pacific. In addition to causing the immediate deaths of thousands, the ashfall and aftermath leads to a global volcanic winter, crop failure, famine and secondary deaths from ash inhalation. In a fit of terror the American people cling even harder to religion and traditional values, while a cabal of leadership seizes the opportunity to subjugate immigrant workers, women, and minorities in the name of saving the American dream.
The stories we came here to tell in season one focus on those who identify as girls and women of all ages whose lives are irrevocably affected by the “John Gray Laws.” Whether they fold or fight becomes the central question of each story, stories that, as a whole, ask us:
What happens when we are too busy surviving to care that the world is falling apart?
